Beltaine is the third of the four Celtic Fire Festivals-first being Samhainne, Imbolg, Beltaine finishing with Lughnassadh. Beltaine falls on May 1 st with the evening of the 30 th of April known as Beltaine eve. It is an ancient fertility festival associated with the Celtic God Bel (Belenus, or Balor) who is a God of light, fire and the Sun.
It is the beginning of the light half of the year, when the Sun sets later in the evening and the hawthorn blossoms; Nature comes into bloom and the Earth is full of fertility and life, growing and green. The planting is over as is the assistance to cattle and sheep to give birth. The days of dark, cold and hunger are gone.
